About Korakuen Stadium
The original cathedral of Japanese baseball. Korakuen Stadium hosted the Yomiuri Giants for 50 years and was the site of countless historic moments — most notably Sadaharu Oh's 868th career home run in 1977, which broke Hank Aaron's record. Demolished after the 1987 season; Tokyo Dome was built immediately adjacent on land that had been Korakuen's ice rink and amusement park, with the original stadium footprint now part of the Tokyo Dome City complex.
Fun facts
- The name "Korakuen" comes from the adjacent Koishikawa Korakuen, one of Tokyo's oldest gardens.
- The Tokyo Dome stands on what was Korakuen's amusement park, not the stadium itself.
- Hosted the famous 1934 Babe Ruth tour games before officially opening to NPB.
