About Heiwadai Stadium
Heiwadai ("Peace Stand") Stadium opened in 1949 in the wake of WWII and hosted the Nishitetsu Lions during their 1950s-60s dynasty era — three consecutive Japan Series titles from 1956-58. After the Lions relocated to Saitama in 1979, the stadium continued hosting occasional NPB games until 1997, then was demolished. The site is now part of Maizuru Park, surrounding the ruins of Fukuoka Castle.
Fun facts
- Named "Heiwadai" (Peace Stand) reflecting the post-WWII peace movement.
- Located on grounds of historic Fukuoka Castle — archaeological excavations during demolition revealed Edo-period ruins beneath the field.
- The Lions' dynasty here in the 1950s is sometimes compared to the Yankees of the same era for their dominance.
