About Hinchliffe Stadium
A 1932 Art Deco landmark perched above the Great Falls of the Passaic River — the only municipally-owned stadium that hosted Negro League games. The New York Black Yankees made it their home for most of the 1930s, with Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and a young Larry Doby (a Paterson native who played high school football here) among the stars who took the field. A National Historic Landmark since 2013, Hinchliffe sat decaying for decades before a $100 million restoration brought it back in 2023 alongside a permanent Negro Leagues museum.
Fun facts
- Larry Doby grew up in Paterson and played high school football at Hinchliffe before becoming the AL's first Black player in 1947.

- The stadium's outfield wall sits on a cliff edge overlooking the 77-foot Great Falls.
- Hosted a 1937 Boxing exhibition by Joe Louis on his way to the heavyweight title.
