About Hamtramck Stadium
Built in 1930 to replace the burned-down Mack Park, Hamtramck Stadium became the Detroit Stars' final Negro National League home before the league collapsed in 1931. The grandstand survived nearly a century of neglect and has been undergoing restoration as a community ballpark and Negro Leagues memorial site. Hall of Famer Turkey Stearnes — who hit .349 over his Negro League career and is the Stars' all-time franchise leader in nearly every offensive category — patrolled the outfield here.
Fun facts
- Turkey Stearnes hit a career .349 average across the Negro Leagues — adjusted to MLB stats, that's now the seventh-highest of all time.
- The Detroit Stars' previous home, Mack Park, burned to the ground in 1929 — Hamtramck Stadium was their replacement.
- After the Stars folded in 1931, the grandstand sat largely unused for 90+ years before the current restoration.
- Located in Hamtramck — a 2.1-square-mile city surrounded entirely by Detroit.
