About Hanshin Koshien Stadium
Built in 1924, Koshien is the oldest stadium in NPB and one of the most beloved venues in all of baseball. The Hanshin Tigers play here, but the stadium is most famous for hosting the National High School Baseball Championship every August — a tournament that captivates the country and where eliminated players famously scoop up handfuls of the legendary brown "Koshien dirt" as keepsakes.
Fun facts
- The reddish-brown infield dirt is a custom blend; eliminated high school players take handfuls home in canvas bags.
- The exterior is famously covered in ivy, similar to Wrigley Field.
- During the August high-school tournament, Hanshin Tigers go on a long road trip and don't play home games for 2-3 weeks.
