About Ruppert Stadium
The home of the Newark Eagles from 1936 through 1948 — and effectively the home court of Effa Manley, the only woman in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Manleys built the Eagles into the dominant Eastern Negro League franchise, culminating in the 1946 Negro World Series win over the Kansas City Monarchs in seven games — widely considered one of the greatest Negro League series ever played. The roster included Larry Doby (the AL's first Black player, signed by Cleveland in 1947) and Monte Irvin (later a Giants star and Hall of Famer). The stadium also briefly hosted Negro World Series games for the New York Black Yankees.
Fun facts
- Owner Effa Manley is the only woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2006).
- Larry Doby went from the 1946 NWS champion Eagles directly to becoming the American League's first Black player in 1947 — just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson's NL debut.
- The 1946 NWS Game 7 vs the Monarchs is sometimes ranked alongside the 1991 Twins-Braves series as one of the greatest seven-game series ever played at any level of pro baseball.
- Demolished in 1967; the site is now occupied by a brewery and warehouse complex along the Passaic River.
