About Kingdome

The Kingdome, a massive concrete dome in downtown Seattle, served as the home of the Mariners from their inaugural 1977 season through 1999. While the building itself was widely considered one of the least attractive stadiums in baseball, it became the stage for one of the most electrifying moments in postseason history.

On October 8, 1995, Edgar Martinez's double down the left-field line scored Ken Griffey Jr. from first base, clinching the ALDS against the Yankees in one of the most iconic plays in baseball history. The moment — with Dave Niehaus's legendary call, "My, oh my!" — is credited with saving baseball in Seattle and generating the public support needed to build a new stadium.

The Kingdome was imploded on March 26, 2000, in what was then the largest building implosion in history. T-Mobile Park (originally Safeco Field) had opened the previous season.
