About Jack Murphy Stadium / Qualcomm Stadium

Jack Murphy Stadium, later known as Qualcomm Stadium, was San Diego's multipurpose sports venue for over three decades. Named after sportswriter Jack Murphy, who campaigned tirelessly for a major-league stadium in San Diego, the facility was expanded multiple times and underwent several name changes.

The Padres' greatest moments came here: their surprise 1984 pennant run, when Steve Garvey's walk-off home run in the NLCS against the Cubs sent San Diego to its first World Series, and the 1998 pennant-winning team led by Tony Gwynn and Kevin Brown.

Tony Gwynn, "Mr. Padre," played his entire 20-year career at this stadium and became San Diego's most beloved athlete. His pursuit of .400 in 1994 (he was hitting .394 when the strike ended the season) captivated the baseball world. The Padres moved to the gorgeous Petco Park in 2004.
