About Candlestick Park

Candlestick Park, perched on a windswept point overlooking San Francisco Bay, was infamous for its brutal weather conditions — bitter wind, fog, and cold that made it one of the most challenging environments in baseball. Stu Miller's famous "blown off the mound" incident during the 1961 All-Star Game (actually a balk caused by a gust) became part of baseball legend.

Despite the elements, Candlestick was home to some of baseball's most memorable moments. Willie Mays patrolled center field here, Juan Marichal and Sandy Koufax dueled on its mound, and the 1989 World Series was interrupted by the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake, which struck just before Game 3.

The Giants left Candlestick after the 1999 season for the gorgeous Pacific Bell Park (now Oracle Park). The 49ers continued using the enclosed stadium until 2013. It was demolished in 2015.
